The Hindu Vocabulary For All Competitive Exams 06th July 2023

1. Conviction(Noun) : दोषसिद्धि  : the action of finding somebody guilty of a crime in a court of law

Synonyms: Judgement , persuasion

Example Sentence: He is to appeal against his conviction.

2. Connoisseur (Noun) : संगणक, विशेषज्ञ : An expert or a person with refined knowledge and appreciation of a particular subject, especially in the arts or fine food and drink.

Synonyms: Expert, specialist, authority

Antonyms: Novice, beginner

Example Sentence: Sarah is a connoisseur of classical music and can discuss the nuances

of different composers and their works.

3. Exhilarate (Verb) : उत्साहित करना : To make someone feel very happy, animated, or elated; to thrill or excite.

Synonyms: Thrill, delight, invigorate

Antonyms: Depress, discourage, dampen, sadden

Example Sentence:  The thrilling roller coaster ride exhilarated the children and brought

smiles to their faces.

4. Iota (Noun) : बिन्दु : A very small or insignificant amount; a tiny bit.

Synonyms: Bit, trace, smidgen, speck, fragment

Antonyms: Abundance, plenty, whole

Example Sentence:  She didn't show an iota of interest in his story and continued

to focus on her book.

5. Pompous (Adjective) : शोभायमान: Having an exaggerated sense of self-importance; displaying excessive dignity or grandeur

Synonyms: Flaunting, Showy, Arrogant, Haughty

Antonyms: Humble, modest, unpretentious, down-to-earth

Example Sentence:  The CEO's pompous behavior during the meeting annoyed the employees and created a negative atmosphere.

6. Penitent (Adjective): अनुतापी : feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentant.

Synonyms: repentant, remorseful, ashamed

Antonyms: impenitent, unrepentant, unapologetic

Example Sentence:  “I’m sorry, ” she said with a penitent smile.

7. Encumbrance (Noun) :बाधा / बोझ  : something that makes movement or progress difficult

Synonyms: obstacle, hurdle, hindrance, impediment

Antonyms: impetus, push, aid, assistance, help, support

Example Sentence:  The high-interest rates on my loan are an encumbrance on my finances.

8. Elapsed(Verb) : व्‍यतीत होना : Pass, go by

Synonyms: Ended , Finished

Antonyms: Alive , Existing

Example Sentence: Thirty minutes elapsed before the performance began.

9. Stymie (Verb.): बाधा डालना : to prevent something from happening or someone from achieving a purpose

Synonyms: Hinder, obstruct, impede,

Antonyms: Assist, aid, facilitate,

Example Sentence:  The lack of funding stymied the progress of the research project.

10. Mulling (Verb) : विचार करना : think about (a fact, proposal, or request) deeply and at length

Synonyms: contemplate, ponder, consider, think over

Antonyms: disregard, ignore, neglect

Example Sentence: After mulling over the job offer for several days, she decided to accept it.
